Insulation
Rented Houses
Rented houses will be required to meet or exceed the appropriate insulation standard for that type of dwelling and its locality, by the 1st of July 2019.
Targeted Areas
The area underneath a house with a crawl space and the area above the ceilings where accessible, will need to meet a certain R value.
R Value
R value is the resistance insulation has to heat loss through it. The higher the R value is, the higher the resistance is to heat loss.
Existing Insulation
Older dwellings that have not had additional insulation installed, are unlikely to meet the standard. Some have none at all and the insulation in those that do, is usually too thin and often settled.
Although aluminium foil under houses doesn't have to be removed if it is in good condition, it may not be repaired or installed due to being a good conductor of electricity.
Establishing The R Values Of Existing Insulation
As part of an inspection, an approximate R value for the various types of insulation will be provided, by using a BRANZ guide of appraised materials.
(BRANZ is an independent and impartial research, testing, consulting and information company providing services and resources for the building industry)
The R value can also be established by Insulation Specialists who can then provide a quote to make improvements as need be.
